Crofting
Burravoe is at the heart of a crofting community. Here are some photos and information about crofting in Burravoe and in Shetland.
Jennifer, our teaching assistant has a croft; her family keep Shetland kae. Here are some photos of her calves.

During the holidays Feionne and James' family clipped their sheep. She took some photos for us.

Crofting has been important on Yell for a long time. We are lucky that the school is next door to Magnie and Mary's croft and they are happy for us to watch them to see what work they are doing. Magnie and Mary still use some of the traditional ways when they are working.
In August Magnie and Mary cut the grass in the park next to the school.
They will get someone to bale it and wrap it for them. This grass will be round baled. Some people make small square bales and some on Yell still make stooks.
On 15th June 06 we went to the Crofthouse Museum and Quendale Watermill. On the way home we went to the knitwear factory to see what happens to the wool from the sheep on Shetland. Click here to see what we learned there. You can see more about our day on our Blog page.
On 31st May 06 we went to The Trondra Crofting Trail, click here to read what Ross
wrote after our visit.
15th May 06
We watched Magnie ploughing a park ready to plant kale.
This will be used to feed the sheep in winter when there is no grass.
10th May 06
We were lucky enough to watch a ewe lambing in the park next to the playground.
Mary keeps her pregant "ladies" in the park next to her house so she can keep an
eye on them.
