September 2009
Tuesday 29th September: Today was James' birthday; Elsie made him a cake and Hazel iced it with a guitar. He chose roast beef for lunch.
Friday 25th September: This morning we had a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. We raised £250; thank you very much to everyone who supported us in any way.
Thursday 24th September: This morning we did some baking for the Macmillan Coffee Morning.
Wednesday 23rd September: This morning we did some hoola hooping in PE with Ms Nisbet.
Friday 18th September: The older ones are working hard on their collaborative project to design and make a toy. They have decided to make a pinball machine and are now trying out ways to make different mechanisms to make the ball move around. They are collecting evidence of their ongoing work and putting it into a wiki.
Thursday 17th September: Today they came to empt our battery box again; they are having to empt it more often now as it is being used so well. We are pleased that we can do our little bit to help recycling.
Tuesday 15th September: Today we had a very exciting day. After lunch we joined in the Glowmeet with Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, and about 25 other schools all over Scotland. We had worked out a question to ask her and were chosen to ask it. (Link to larger version of picture)
In the evening we had a parent and child ICT workshop when everyone came and tried some of the software and websites that we use regularly. We showed parents how much of our work is now stored electronically and how they can see it. We hope that parents found it useful and interesting.
Monday 14th September: This morning we looked at different toys to see how they worked; some were clockwork, some worked by levers and some used pneumatics. We can use these ideas for our own toy designs.
The basketball hoop which the children chose to "spend" the Tesco vouchers on, came last week and this evening Ian Turner put it up for us. Thanks very much to parents and friends who let us have their vouchers.
Friday 11th September: Today we used our toy designs to start making our wheeled toys.
The older ones are collaborating to design a toy; they are putting their ideas and designs on to a wiki.
Wednesday 9th September: Today in science some of us thought about how cylinders can help us move objects easily when we use them as rollers. Afterwards we used what we had learned to help us to design a wheeled toy.
Tuesday 8th September: Today we had a look at some of the old toys which people had brought in to show everyone.
Monday 7th September: Today we made jointed puppets as part of our toys project. The older ones are learning about levers in science.
Saturday 5th September: Yell Show was today. We won 1st prize for our broccoli, 2nd for our tatties and carrots and 3rd for our courgette. We also entered the plastic bag football we made with Mrs Davis and won 3rd prize in the miscellaneous section of the craft class. Some of us entered other classes in the show and won prizes. The weather was fine and it was a good day.
Friday 4th September: Today we harvested some of our vegetables so that we could enter them in the produce section of Yell Show.
We ate some of the ones which were the wrong size for lunch and we all took some home.
Wednesday 2nd September: Today we went for a walk to see the new art exhibition at the Old Haa, whilst we were there we counted the paving slabs so that we could correct the answers in the Children's Guide to the Old Haa. Afterwards we walked down to the shop so we could take some photos to add to the page about Burravoe we are creating in Glow.
