March 2011

Friday 25th March: Today was the last day of term; we have 2 weeks holiday. This morning Chloe came to do a workshop with us; she did some work on photography; we had to take lots of photos and she is going to send them back to us telling us how well we did for creativity, composition and focus.

Thursday 24th March: This morning we did a Glowmeet with the Head of Glow and all the Glow key contacts from different local authorities in Scotland some of whom were meeting in Stirling and some of whom were like us and in the meeting virtually. We told them about how we have been using Glow wikis and showed them some parts of some of our wikis.
Wednesday 23rd March: Today we received 2 more postcards from the postcard project; one of them was from Siberia in Russia!
In the afternoon we had a glowmeet with Longhaugh School in Dundee; we asked each other questions about where we live.
Friday 18th March: Today was Red Nose Day; everyone had decided to "be as red as you can", Jennifer organised a red treasure hunt. We raised over £190! We were pleased to have a visit from Stephen a student from Brae.

Saturday 12th March: Today we heard that Magnie, out pet whale, has arrived in New Zealand! He has gone on a holiday to St Clair School in Dundedin.
Super7Scoopers have posted some pictures of him at their school.
Friday 11th March:Today we received a postcard from Merton School in Wisconsin, USA. We have made a display to show where all the schools we are in touch with are on the world map.

Today we had a test glowmeet with Katie Barrowman from LTS; we have been invited to talk to the Head of Glow and to people from other Local Authorities in Scotland about our Glow wikis and we needed to make sure the new glowmeet works for us - it did!

Thursday 10th March: 2 of our pupils went to a teachers' meeting after school today; pupils from the 3 schools on Yell were invited to tell the teachers what they thought teachers did that helped them learn better and what they felt didn't help. We were very proud of how confident our pupils were and how well they can reflect upon their learning.
Wednesday 9th March: We had snow again today - we have had a few signs of spring coming but this reminded us that it is still winter! This morning the youngest pupils went to the Post Office to post our next group of postcards that we have written as part of the postcard project. This time we sent some to England, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA and Russia. We thought it might take us a while to stick on all the airmail stickers and stamps so we let another customer go in front of us!

Monday 7th March: Some of our children had been to visit the Lewis Chessmen at the weekend; they had bought the replica chess set. The pieces were too big for our chessboard so P6/7 were set the challenge of making a board that was the right size in 30 minutes; they did a great job!

Thursday 3rd March: Today was World Book Day; this morning we watched and listened to stories being read using the World Book Day website. We wrote some stories ourselves. There are some great games and ideas on the World Book Day site - try them out!
