Wednesday 26th June: Today we did tie dying! We used white t shirts. It was a lovely day so we did it outside. We used Mrs Lewis' washing line to dry them on.
Monday 24th June: This afternoon we had some visitors from India; they were from Tamil Nadu and are over in Shetland as part of the link we have with some schools in the area. It was good to show them around and meet them in person.
In the evening we had our concert; we started with some musical items and sang to the audience. We showed everyone "Stuck" our puppet play. We were able to show them where we are on the Scottish Book Trust website too!
Thursday 20th June: This afternoon was Yell Primary Sports.
Wednesday 19th June: Today we went to the South Mainland for the day to learn more about the Shetland knitwear industry - the visit will help us with our work next session when we are learning about sheep as part of our Crofting Connections work. We started the day at Laurence Odie Knitwear where we had a fantastic tour around the factory and were able to ask lots of great questions! We are very grateful to Laurence and the staff who went to so much trouble for us. As a surprise, Laurence had asked Sarah, his designer, to set up the computer to tell one of the machines to make a Burravoe School panel for us to watch being knitted. Everyone was so excited by this that he gave everyone one each instead of just one for the school!
We could see all the different processes that happen in the factory and found out that the jumpers are exported all around the world and a few are sold in the UK.
After we had been to the factory we had lunch in the Hoswick Visitor Centre and looked at the looms in the little museum.
After lunch we went to visit Nielanell's shop in Hoswick. Niela showed us some of the things which inspire her work (including some crocodile skin!) and then she showed us some of the wool she uses and Minty, her assistant, showed us which sheep it came from. She showed us her spinning wheel which came from New Zealand and showed us how she can use it to spin ribbons and beads into the wool using her wheel.
Wednesday 5th June: Today we performed our puppet play based on the book: Stuck by Oliver Jeffers. We had a technical rehearsal in the morning to make sure if worked through Glow tv and then in the afternoon we performed it for Middleton Park School, Aberdeen and the Scottish Book Trust. We followed it with a Q&A session. Everyone did a brilliant job and we had some excellent feedback!
This is a photo of the 2 schools during the Q&A session.
Tuesday 4th June: This morning we watched a glowmeet from the Botanical Gardens at Dundee University as part of the Look, Capture, Create Project. We learned about mathematical patterns found in plants. We went out in the grounds and in the park next door to see what plants we could find so that we could share photos with the other schools doing the project.
