January 2008

Monday 28th January: Everyone was back today; lots of people have had flu this term and it was the first day for a while that everyone has been here.
Friday 25th January: Today we tried some Indian style sweets which we bought in Lerwick.

Wednesday 23rd January: Today we made naan bread. This took us longer than we thought because the yeast was slow to work. The recipe was similar to bread dough but we added yoghurt. Everyone liked eating these.

This afternoon Andy came and we sang a song in 2 part harmony. He explained to us about harmony and about rhythm. We did more work on our stories; Ross and Feionne are starting to think about music for their story.

Tuesday 22nd January: Today we made chapatis and ate them with our lunch. Sophie had made Indian breads before and showed us how to knead the dough properly.

Wednesday 16th January: This afternoon Andy Ross came to sing and make music with us; this is a Youth Music funded project. Scottish Arts Council logoHe told us some stories from India and then we started to write our own stories to which we will add music. At the end of the afternoon we ate the Kulfi which everyone liked. Andy told us that in India they use buffalo milk to make it.
Tuesday 15th January: Today we made Kulfi which is a type of Indian ice-cream. It contains double cream, evaporated milk and pistachio nuts.
Monday 14th January: Today we started some Indian cookery; we made 2 versions of Lassi, a traditional Indian drink. The savoury one had cumin in it and the sweet lassi had a mango. We made both versions in a blender. Most people liked the sweet one best.
Tuesday 8th January: Today was the first day of term; we started our topic about India. We are learning about the landscape and climate of the country. We are also going to learn a little about Hinduism as that is the main religion of the country. Later in the term, Jeanette Nowak is coming to talk to us about the time she spent in Tamil Nadu which is in the south of India.
